Defame’s shadow box series is a ongoing project involving taxidermy and illustration. This was the very first shadow box created.
Lunar Dwelling is a work that displays a Cryptotympana Facialis (cicada) as the main focal point. The cicada is known for it’s symbolism of transformation, resurrection, renewal, and spiritual realization. The Ankh on the head of the cicada represents the unification of masculine and feminine of our higher selves. On the background there are roses, representing life’s beauty and pain. Painted on the bottom are skulls and an Ouroboros, the skulls representing many ego deaths and the Ouroboros represents the cyclical nature of these deaths as well as the eternal self or Atman. At the top we have a conch shell accompanied by two roses, the two roses represent the beauty and love while the conch shell represents the body as well as awakening.
Each piece is hand crafted.
