Defame’s shadow box series is a ongoing project involving taxidermy and illustration.
Lunar Dwelling is a work that displays a Cryptotympana Facialis (cicada) as the main focal point. The cicada is known for it’s symbolism of transformation, resurrection, renewal, and spiritual realization. On the cicada you have a “as above so below” symbolism as well as a metallic treatment on the shell and wings to represent royalty. On the background there a radiant eye emerging from roses and skulls. The roses and skulls represent the struggle and pain as well as beauty and vibrancy of life. As for the rising eye it symbolizes the ascension of ones true self. Toward the bottom you have cobras and skulls symbolizing letting go. At the bottom is a checkered path representing the path to the ALL and to higher self is in balance and through choice.
On the top of the frame there is a winged eye pointing to the great eye, the never resting, always present eye that is omnipresent, accompanied by a checkered background symbolizing all life is balance, and for life to exist they must be duality, opposites and choice. The left side is of the caduceus (without wings) to represent the process of transmutation and astral light; it being on the left side of the frame also signifies the famine energy. On the right side there is a cobra with a Yin-Yang symbolizing strength through balance as well as transformation and power; it being on the right side of the frame signifies the masculine energy. Lastly, the bottom of the frame has three shields with skull/cross-bones and laurel leaves representing thrice power in psychic awareness, purification and the protection of transformation.
This wonderful piece can be displayed on the wall but if one is of the magickal arts it can be charged as a talisman on an alter. If this piece speaks to you recite “I feel positive changes manifesting, I feel my power growing. May my Will and Spirit ascend through purification and may my path be guided always back to the ALL”
