Defame’s shadow box series is a ongoing project involving taxidermy and illustration. This was the second shadow box ever created.
Tudor Rising is a work that displays a Cryptotympana Facialis (cicada) as the main focal point. The cicada is known for it’s symbolism of transformation, resurrection, renewal, and spiritual realization. The Ankh on the abdomen of the cicada represents the unification of masculine and feminine of our higher selves and spiritual transformation. On the head of the insect is the Tudor Rose symbolizing the union of apposing forces, balance and renewal. The background is abstract with splatters of black to symbolize expansion. Painted on the bottom are skulls in flames and the Tudor Rose symbolizing renewal through purification and death , the skulls representing egos. Both sides of the shadow box have reapers, signifying guidance through the purification process of ending cycles and transformation. At the top is a painted phoenix with '“Egyptian wings” the wings representing transcendence and the phoenix symbolizing Transformation and immortality.
Each piece is hand crafted.
